Syllabus:

Develop an understanding of how sustainability principles can be reflected in urban form.

Unit Outcomes:

Upon completion of this unit students will have developed a critical analytical capacity and an understanding of how sustainability principles can be reflected in urban form. This will be achieved through an examination of the evolution of the sustainability debate, the growth of interest groups and their metamorphosis to NGOs and the importance of interest groups and NGOs to urban and regional planning. Students will critically analyse the distinctions between sustainability and sustainable developmentand between global versus local environmental issues and between international agreements and Australian responses to them. Other topics addressed include national and state policies and inter governmental agreements, the need for broad scale planning, local programs for sustainability (Agenda 21 etc), building more sustainable urban form and performance indicators and audits.
