Syllabus: | Overviews the applications of molecular biology in medicine, industry and agriculture. Genetic engineering, recombinant DNA technology, biopharmaceuticals, transgenic animals and plants, genomics, protemonics, DNA diagnostics and forensics. Animal cloning, cell culture and tissue engineering. Monoclonal antibody technolgy. Ethical and social implications of modern biotechnology. Introduction to Cytogenetics - the study of Chomosome structure and variation. Chromosome mutations and aberrations, changes inchromosome number, cytogenetic syndromes and diseases. Methods of chromosome analysis, staining and banding. Chromosome sorting and microdissection. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successsful completion of this unit students will have an understanding of the principles of Molecular Techniques, application of Molecular Techniques in Biotechnology and social and ethical implications of Molecular Biotechnology. |
