Syllabus: | On successful completion of this unit students will have identified the organs of the immune system and explained the roles of the immune system in health and disease. Discussed the cellular basis of immunity and the clonal selection theory of immunity. Described the processes involved in the induction and expression of immune responses. Described the structure and function of antibodies in immunity and in selected immunoassays. Demonstrated technical and interpretive skills relevant to selected immunological procedures. |
Syllabus: | The structure and functions of the immune system. Antigens and antibodies. Lymphocyte physiology. Cell membrane antigen systems. The complement system. Histocompatibility and the MHC. Antigen antibody reactions including immunodiffusion in gels. Immunoassays - principles, applications and data reduction. Western blotting. Monoclonal antibodies. |
