Syllabus:General chemistry involving elements and compounds, chemical bonding, structure of matter, stoichiometry, volumetric analysis, oxidation/reduction, shapes of molecules and intermolecular forces. Experiments involving quantitative analysis, introductory titrimetric analysis, measurement of heats and rates of reactions.
 
Unit Outcomes: On completion of this unit, students will have completed tasks that will have developed skills in the following areas - Time management and planning skills. Completion of laboratory exercises, laboratory reports and quizzes satisfactorily and on time setting aside time to study, research, revise and review unit materials. Revision of lecture materials. Effective communication - Use of traditional and electronic means to communicate effectively. Analysis and evaluation of information: Analysing and critically evaluating information. Problem solving - Analysis and interpretation of data. Reviewing literature (written and electronic). Teamwork - Working with fellow team members in completing laboratory exercises. Revising and discussing unit materials. Practical competence - Correct use of laboratory equipment. Working competently and safely in the laboratory. Collecting and processing data.
