Syllabus:

The basic biology of living organisms. Characteristics, adaptations and life-cycles of bacteria, fungi, algae, liverworts, mosses, ferns and conifers, as well as the structure and function of flowering plants - stems, roots, leaves and flowers are considered in the first part of this unit. The second part focuses on the basic organisation of the animal body - evolutionary relationships between animal groups, reproduction and development, respiration and cardiovascular systems, excretion and water balance, nerve and endocrine systems, animal feeding patterns, locomotion and body support.

Unit Outcomes:

On completion of this unit, students will have - Developed an understanding of the basic biology of bacteria, fungi, algae, liverworts, mosses, ferns and conifers. Developed an understanding of the basic structure and functioning of flowering plants. Learnt to recognise and distinguish between different groups of lower and vascular plants. Be able to use appropriate vocabulary in giving a written account of animal classification, evolution of animals, and the physiology and reproduction of such animals.Demonstrate the use of basic apparatus and laboratory skills in field and laboratory studies of plants and animals.

Final written examination 50%, Laboratory exercises 25%, Tests 25%. This is a grade/mark assessment.
