Syllabus:Elementry geodesy. Coordinate systems and transformations. Computations on the spheroid. The geoid. Geocentric Datum of Australia, GDA94. Other Australian datums and map projections. Mecator's projections - UTM, local grids. Computations on the map gridof Australia. Traverse computations. The Australian height datum and orthmetric heights. Introduction to the Global Positioning System, GPS. Three dimensional coordinate transformations.
 
Unit Outcomes: Upon completion of this unit the student will have - Developed knowledge of the fundamental concepts of coordinate systems, datums and map projections, including Australia's new datum and map grid, applied two and three dimensional coordinate transformations to terrestrial coordinate data, performed transfer of control calculations on the map plane and ellipsoid, developed knowledge of the role of the Earth's gravity field in height determination and of the principles of satellite positioning systems.
