Syllabus: | Further develops and extends the skills acquired in the first semester, and to develop the skills of Academic English needed in tertiary education, so that students are able to research and write on topics that require discussion and development within an extended essay of 2000 words. Provides further opportunities to practice and enhance communication skills in the spoken and written language. Proficiency in listening and reading. Awareness of different study skills. Awareness of the different usages ofEnglish. |

Unit Outcomes: | Reading. Acquire good reading habits to understand, enjoy, and appreciate a wide range of texts, including the literature of other cultures. Develop further efficient reading skills such as skimming, making inferences and understanding main ideas in order to comprehend a variety of academic texts. Express constructive opinions based on critical reading skills in response to the different types of texts read. Writing. Develop further writing skills required in the process of writing academic texts. Write argumentative paragraphs with clear topic and supporting sentences. Paraphrase and summarise different kinds of texts to support and refute arguments. Develop the ability to express themselves critically in written language. Produce a research essay that requires citations, both in-text and end of text references using the Harvard Referencing System. Listening - Listen for main ideas, specific details and transition cues in any listening materials produced by speakers from different regions to develop an awareness of different accents of English. Develop note taking and note making skills. Express constructive opinions and respond with critical evaluation to a variety of listening texts. |
