Syllabus:Introduces and develops capabilities and proficiency in the English language essential for tertiary education and for academic purposes, and to reinforce as well as extend existing skills and proficiency in the language. It specifically provides students with appropriate learning experiences to develop the integration of critical reading skills, academic writing skills, effective study skills, presentation skills and effective listening and communication skills. This is a significant unit. Failure in this unit will not allow students to proceed to further units of study.
 
Unit Outcomes: Reading. On completion of this unit, students will have the ability to - Use efficient reading skills and strategies such as skimming/scanning, understanding main ideas and making inferences in order to comprehend a variety of academic texts. Use dictionary skills and vocabulary skills to understand and use a wide range of vocabulary appropriate to tertiary education. Apply critical reading skills and to be able to respond to different types of texts read by summarising main ideas and offering their comments and views. Practice extensive reading to understand, enjoy, and appreciate a wide range of texts in the English language. Writing. Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental concepts and elements of academic writing. Develop essential skills such as brainstorming, outlining, drafting and editing required in the process of writing academic texts. Write paragraphs with clear topic and supporting sentences. Paraphrase and summarise different kinds of texts. Develop the ability to express themselves creatively and critically in written language. Write well-structured and cohesive academic essays.
