Syllabus: | Introduction to soil and rock mechanics. Nature of soils. Flow of water in soils. Shear stress. Types of foundations. Rock as an engineering material. Intact rock, discontinuities and rock mass structure. Failure mechanism. |

Unit Outcomes: | On completion of this unit students will have - Understood the engineering nature of soils. Understood rock as an engineering material. Performed basic stress analysis. Understood the origin and measurement of insitu stress and strain. Analysed rock massstructure and failure mechanisms. Understood stress around underground openings. |
