Syllabus: | The principles and application of environmental health toxicology. Risk assessment and evaluation, risk management and communication. Environmental and workplace monitoring. Detection and evaluation of hazardous exposures. Ecosystem dynamics, environmental systems and health. Pollution processes, monitoring evaluation and control. Environmental planning, social responsibility, environmental and health evaluation. Environmental management and auditing. Principles of sustainable development. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of - the mechanisms of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of toxic materials and the basic principles of dose effect and response relationships, toxicity testing and the application of dose effect and dose response to the setting of environmental and industrial standards. Demonstrate an understanding of - the strategies and techniques applied to the monitoring and evaluation of environmental contaminants, the application and limitations of the various management approaches, control measures and standards that are available to deal with environmental and workplace exposures. Demonstrate an understanding of natural environmental systems, the human - environment interaction and the principles of sustainability. Demonstrate an understanding of environmental systems management the Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Health Impact Assessment procedures. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and application of environmental health risk. |
