| Syllabus: | The linguistic characteristics of different texts and texts types (both oral and written) according to function and genre. Examination of what it is that makes texts meaningful and coherent to users in terms of style, register, vocabulary, phonology and syntax. An overview of schema theory, speech art therapy and discourse analysis. |

| Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit, students will have - An overview of the theoretical underpinnings of discourse analysis and semantics. Identified differences in the structure and function of a range of oral and written texts. Analysed in some depth the linguistic characteristics of a range of oral and written texts. |
