Syllabus:Scientific principles that underpin animal production. Selected topics include - nutrition, health, breeding and fibre production.
 
Unit Outcomes: Explain the principles of protein and carbohydrate metabolism and describe the application of feeding standards to livestock Explain the principles of drought feeding and the use of alternative feed sources. Determine the nutritive value of some common feed sources. Explain the physiological control of the reproductive cycle and discuss how reproduction can be manipulated to improve animal production. Describe the application of existing and new technologies to animal reproduction and growth and conducta breeding soundness examination of an animal. Design a breeding program that incorporates the principles of genetic improvement. Describe the mechanism by which animal disease occurs and discuss the indications for and effective use of different typesof therapeutics. Describe the structure and function of mammalian skin. Outline the variability of fibre types and discuss the factors that affect fibre development and growth.
