Syllabus:Examination of why people use psychoactive drugs, the effects of psychoactive drugs, the epidemiology of psychoactive drug use in Australia, drug related problems and their causes, several models of drug use and drug use problems and the philosophy underpinning harm reduction approaches to drug use problems.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will be able to - Discuss why people use drugs. Demonstrate knowledge of the effects of a range of psychoactive drugs. Demonstrate knowledge of the epidemiology of drug use in Australia. Describe a range of drug-related problems and how they occur. Describe several models of drug use and drug problems. Demonstrate the basic understanding of dependence and addiction. Articulate the philosophy underpinning harm reduction approaches to drug use.
