Syllabus:	Explores the broad principles of production and postharvest handling of tree fruit crops and table grapes. Fruit tree physiology, flowering, fruit set and development. Pollination. Major fruit groups. Orchard establishment and management. Pests and disease control. Nutrition and growth regulators. Irrigation management. Mechanisation and treellis systems. Harvesting and handling.
Unit Outcomes:	On successful completion of this unit students will have classified major groups of fruit crops according to pomological classification, use and seasonal requirements. Explained the appropriate orchard planting, establishment and management of the main fruit crops. Selected suitable agronomic management techniques e.g. training systems, nutrition, growth regulators, irrigation, pest and disease control for each of the main fruit crops for given production areas in Western Australia. Explained fruit tree physiology, flowering, pollination, fruit set and development and evaluated the harvesting and post-harvest handling of the main fruit crops. Used information resources to undertake an effective literature search to critically analyse the topic being considered. Written assignments and field reports in an approved style appropriately referenced and generally indicate a high standard of communication skills. Demonstrated an ability to meet deadlines and demonstrated the practical application of scientific principles through report writing and field trips.
