Syllabus:Atomic structure and the periodic table. Chemical bonding - ionic, metallic and covalent bonding - polarity and intermolecular forces. Chemical equilibria - ionic, acid-base and complex equilibria. Acids and bases - polyprotic acids and titration curves. Covalency and molecular stereochemistry, Lewis structures, hybridisation and resonance. Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) theory. Oxidation and reduction, electrochemical cells, reduction potentials, the Nernst equation. Introductory organic chemistry - hydrocarbons, functional groups, isomerism, organic reactions and polymers.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have defined and discussed the various chemistry concepts and principles covered . Shown competency in performing certain chemistry laboratory operations.
