Area: | Department of Civil Engineering |
Credits: | 12.5 |
Contact Hours: | 3.0 |
Seminar: | 1 x 3 Hours Weekly |
Prerequisite(s): | 302788 (v.1) Structural Analysis 365 or any previous version
|
Syllabus: | Concepts of elasticity in two and three dimensional continua. Finite element method - introduction, application of stiffness method, matrix solution techniques. Basic assumption of displacement function, elements for 2D plane stress and plain strain, modelling techniques, structural applications. Beyond the Basics - dynamics and nonlinearity. Use of commercial software for finite element analysis. Instability - the theory of buckling. Buckling of columns, frames and plates. Imperfections and restraints.;; |
  |
Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have an understanding of the theory of elasticity for solid bodies and of the buckling behaviour of structures. They will be introduced to the finite element method and shall establish basic proficiency in its application via commercial software to structural problems. |
