Syllabus: | On completion of this unit students will have - Further Developed their ability to view current major environmental issues from the perspective of an earth scientist and will be aware of the vital role played by geologists and geochemists in managing theenvironment. Been further provided with an understanding of the interaction of evolving life with earth processes through time. |

Syllabus: | Environmental Geoscience - Class tests 7.5%, Feildtrip report 10%, Theory examination 32.5%, Evolving Earth - Assignments 30%, Examination 20%. This is by grade/mark assessment. |
Syllabus: | Environmental Geoscience - geological hazards - volcanoes, earthquakes, coastal processes. Mining and rehabilitation, metal and nutrient pollution, environmental effects of mining and energy production, geochemistry and health. Climate change and the global atmosphere - ozone, greenhouse, local air pollution, acid rain. Evolving Earth - Interaction of life with Earth processes over four billion years, time in earth history, astrobiology, origins of life, in space and on earth, climate change, snowball earth to greenhouse world. Role of plate techtonics, mechanisms of evolution, extinction and human evolution. |
