Syllabus:Basis of genetic engineering and recombination of DNA technology, gene cloning and expression techniques - DNA blotting and hybidisation, DNA sequencing and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Application of molecular biology techniques in biomedicine and agriculture. DNA profiling, transgenics, gene therapy, genetic disease diagnosis and cancer.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Demonstrated knowledge of basic molecular techniques used for nucleic acid based investigations. Understood the safe use of radioactive substances in a laboratory environment. Performed a range of mathematical calculations related to the manipulation and interpretation of laboratory data. Demonstrated practical expertise with the performance of basic molecular techniques. Demonstrated competence in preparation of reagents for use in nucleic based applications. Demonstrated knowledge of the applications of the molecular techniques.
