Syllabus:Laboratory Mathematics - SI units, conversion of units, significant figures, density, specific gravity, water of hydration, percentage composition, molarity, expressions of solution concentration, dilutions. Laboratory methods - photometric calculations,haemocytometer calculations. Determination of reference ranges. Calculations associated with quality control. Introduction to statistics. Evaluation of laboratory methods.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have - Knowledge of the introduction to laboratory mathematics and the different types of measurement that may be made in the medical laboratory. Demonstrated an understanding of SI units, conversion ofunits, significant figures, density, specific gravity, water of hydration, percentage composition, molarity, expressions of solution concentration, dilutions, photometric and haemocytometer calculations, determination of reference ranges, calculations associated with quality control, introduction to statistics, evaluation of laboratory methods. Understood how laboratory measurements are interpreted with respect to the diagnosis of disease.
