Area:Department of Chemical Engineering
Credits:12.5
Contact Hours:2.5
Lecture:1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Tutorial:2 x 1 Hours Monthly
Anti Requisite(s):302214 (v.2) ChE 558 Advanced Process Control or any previous version
Prerequisite(s):302264 (v.2) ChE 326 Process Control or any previous version
Syllabus:Cascade, Ratio and Feedforward Control. PID Enhancements - Inferential control, over-ride control/selective control, scheduling controller tuning, implementation issues. Other Advanced Control Techniques - deadtime compensation (the Smith Projector), Adaptive control. Multi-input Multi-output (MIMO) Control Systems - Process and control loop interactions, Control loop ;pairings - the RGA method, Decoupling control systems, Multivariable control techniques. Digital Control Systems - Introduction, Z transforms, Development of discrete time models, Dynamic response of discrete time systems, Discrete time control algorithms, Closed loop analysis, Digital control system implementation.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have gained an introduction to advanced chemical process control concepts, namely, feedforward, cascade, ratio and inferential control. They will also become familiar with multi-loop control design including pairing and decoupling for chemical process systems and the design and implementation of digital control techniques for selected chemical engineering systems.
