Syllabus:Flow of compressible fluids in pipes and systems, two-phase flow. Flow through porous media. Filtration. Sedimentation theory. Flocculation. Accelerated sedimentation using centrifuges and cyclones. Fluidisation.
 
Unit Outcomes: To extend the fluid mechanics fundamentals covered in ChE 221 by introducing the student to elements of fluid and particle mechanics and to develop a theoretical and practical basis for the design of equipment for handling and separation operations. Emphasises practical design and sizing of equipment for chemical engineering applications, particularly separation processes using fluid mechanics principles and pipe sizing for compressible and two-phase flow.
