Syllabus:Global and national factors influencing maternal and child health in developing countries. Women's health and influences on safe motherhood, parenting and family planning within cultural and religious contexts. Nutritional deficiencies and disease. Major causes of morbidity, mortality and disability. Vaccine preventable diseases. Family and community role, status of women. Program development and application within identified health care contexts.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to- Examine global, national and local factors impacting on the health of women and children in developing countries. Outline the magnitude, patterns and causes of maternal and child morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Develop an in-depth understanding and knowledge of antenatal and obstetric causes of public health importance, and current intervention strategies. Critically appraise principles of programme development within the context of specific maternal and child health care issues.
