Syllabus: | Qualitative and quantitative research theory and practice. The genesis of qualitative research from social sciences to medical anthropology. Empirical and scientific research processes and the complementary use of qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Developing aims, objectives and testing hypotheses. Research design, planning and sampling in qualitative and quantitative research and evaluation. Data saturation, triangulation, focus groups and principles of data analysis. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will be able to- Explain the theoretical and practical applicability of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Discuss the complementary use of both methods. Summarise the application of research designs ranging form experimental to non-experimental. Discuss the types, levels and role of evaluation research. Explain the processes of planning, sampling, data collection and data analysis in qualitative and quantitative research. Explain the processes of triangulation, saturation of data and use of focus groups. Assess the design of research instruments for qualitative and quantitative data collection. Explain the limitations of research paradigms. Identify ethical and practical considerations in doing health research in a developing country. |
