Syllabus:Broad understanding of major theoretical debates underpinning social policy process and practice in the Australian context. It pays special attention to the institutional framework of policy making - including the economic, political, cultural and Aboriginal contexts. Draws from power and decision-making theories to inform critically the study of social policy. Economic rationalism, citizenship and 'new' managerialism are covered as part of current trend in policy debates.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will be have- Demonstrated an understanding of the interplay between government, community groups and business in policy formation; knowledge of theoretical frameworks for policy making. Explored the emergence of policy communities and networks in policy process and practices. Examined specific policy case studies, and highlight the role of government and non-government sectors. Developed and critiqued alternate policy processes and practices applicable to an area of interest.
