Syllabus:Open pit design process. Production planning, cut off grade optimization, production scheduling optimization, equipment selection, simulation and modelling and case study.
 
Unit Outcomes: On completion of this unit students will have - The ability to prepare a feasability study of an open pit project. Demonstrated an understanding of the techniques used for pit optimisation and their limitations. The ability to generate a production schedule for an open pit mine. Understood the impact of cutoff grades on the mine plan. Ability to optimise loader - truck operations in open pit mining.

Unit Assessment Breakdown: Assignments/labs 30%, Final examination 20%, Midterm test 20%, Pit optimism and feasability 30%. This is by grade/mark assessment. A minimum grade of 50% is required to pass the unit. All assignments, lab tasks must be completed satisfactorily and the exams must be passed.
