Syllabus:Ways in which cultural narratives of modernity and postmodernity are embedded in larger historical and conceptual frameworks. Through the analysis of recent and contemporary popular genres, this unit explores the contexts of meaning production and the ways in which they change over time.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Explored further the close relationship between travel and fiction, focusing on the historical emergence and transformation of narratives associated with modernity and colonialism. Addressed the narrativisation of modern economic individualism and how this relates to colonial expansion and the representation of the 'colonial' other. Examined ways in which the colonised answers back through narratives that reclaim a voice and the power of representation. Developed critical perspectives on cross-cultural interaction and narrativisation. Attained an understanding of the themes and subjectivity and identity that are further developed in the streams taught within the BA (communication and cultural studies).
