Syllabus:Individual perceptions of health - values, beliefs, practices. Characteristics of the current health industry, consumers of health. Codes and standards of practice. Legal implications in nursing practice. Nurses Act. Public and private health services and policy in Western Australia. Measurement and recording of health data. Accessing information technologies. Nursing informatics. Learning techniques and practices. Academic expectations - referencing, annotated bibliography, literacy and critical thinking. Goal setting, organisation of study commitments.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit students will have explored understandings of health. Documented relevant health data related to self. Demonstrated beginning competencies in literacy relevant health. Demonstrated knowledge of the health care environment, health care consumers and the role of the nurse. Accessed relevant information using a variety of technologies. Discussed health policy and services in Western Australia.
