Syllabus:Introduction to the effect of climate and microclimate characteristics of building performance - sun movement and position to determine distribution of sunlight and shadows, consideration of factors that effect the thermal energy loads in buildings, computer simulation of thermal loads in buildings and energy efficient building design.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Been introduced to climate and microclimatic characteristics of areas in which buildings are located. Been introduced to sun movement and position, to determine distribution of sunlight and shadows. Considered factors that affect the thermal energy loads in buildings. Created a computer simulation of thermal loads in buildings. An understanding of energy efficient designs of buildings including innovative technologies.
Unit Assessment Breakdown: Case study 40%, Exam 30%, Post Occupancy Evaluation 20%, Tutorial Participation 10%. This is by grade/mark assessment.
