Syllabus:An introduction to some of the major ideas and events in the history of art. Designed as a basic introduction to the history of ideas and the effects such ideas have had on the evolution of art. While the unit has a Euro-centric bias, students are introduced to ideas from other cultural histories as an integral part of the unit. Students are taught the visual literacy needed to be able to understand the history, and the contemporary practice of art.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Been provided with the philosophical and contextual framework for professional practice in the visual arts. Acquired the necessary skills to locate and retrieve information from a wide variety of disciplines appropriate to an investigation of visual culture. Acquired the necessary skills to critically investigate relevant theories associated with visual culture. An ability to assess the criteria by which visual arts in interpreted and evaluated. Gained practical experience in the critical appreciation of art.
