Syllabus:	Podiatric Surgery of the foot and ankle, review of common techniques used in surgery of the foot and ankle. Surgical management of the podiatric patient. An appreciation of podiatric surgical protocol and be able to work, evaluate and communicate in the surgical environment. History of podiatric surgery in Australia and the world. Principles of below knee casting. Use of diathermy, electro surgery techniques, equipment for soft tissue removal. Suturing techniques. Nail surgery - avulsion and matrix cautery practical sessions. Pre and post operative care, record keeping. Review of resuscitation. Podiatric Orthopaedics - Podiatric management of foot disorders using orthoses, footwear manufacture and modification.
Unit Outcomes:	On successful completion of this unit students will have - Developed an understanding of the surgical management of orthopaedic problems as they relate to the lower extremity. An appreciation of surgical protocol and be able to work and communicate in asurgical environment. Developed the clinical skills necessary to carry out a nail avulsion and cautery of the matrix using phenol. Developed the clinical skills necessary in prescribing, fitting and adjusting orthotic devices in podiatry practice. Developed an understanding of orthopaedic footwear manufacture and the possible modifications available in the treatment of gross orthopaedic conditions. Developed an understanding of the theory of prosthetics i.e. ankle foot orthoses, and their use in orthopaedic conditions.
