Syllabus:

Physiological principles of the afferent systems in particular those subserving pain. Concepts of sensation and perception and the structures involved during pain. Joint receptors and the Gate Control theory and the descending pain control systems. Effect of pain on normal movement patterns, physical methods of pain relief.

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit the student will have demonstrated - an extensive knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of clinical pain syndromes, an understanding of the mechanisms, manifestations and consequences of physiological and pathological, basic experimental and clinical, acute and chronic, superficial and deep tissue and peripheral and central pain. Identified the scientific basis for different clinical presentations of pain and explained the mechanisms by which certain treatments forclinical pain are thought to operate.
