Syllabus:

Eucaryotic and prokaryotic cells - introduction to micro-organisms, molecular biochemistry, intercellular communication, structure and function of nucleic acids. Inborn errors of metabolism, chromosomal disorders and teratogenesis. Infestations of the skin, gastrointestinal tract and malaria. Comparative muscle - cardiac skeletal and smooth muscle. Nervous systems - nerve metabolism, cholinergic and adrenergic mechanisms other transmitter substances and synaptic transmission. Inflammation and trauma. Cardiovascular system - regulatory mechanisms and their therapeutic implications, pacemaker tissue, arrhythmias, drug effects on cardiac metabolism, heart and special circulatory disorders and oedema. Kidney physiology - electrolyte balance, diuresis, secretion and reabsorption. Renal pH regulation.

Unit Outcomes:

On successful completion of this unit students will have - developed an introductory knowledge of basic molecular mechanisms in relation to the structure and function of biological systems, demonstrated an appreciation (with emphasis on the possible sites of drug influence) the relationship between basic molecular events and the function and pathophysiology of selected tissues and organs and developed an understanding of the problem of common parasitic infestations in humans.
