Area:Department of Architecture and Interior Architecture
Credits:25.0
Contact Hours:3.0
Lecture:1 x 1.5 Hours Weekly
Tutorial:1 x 1.5 Hours Weekly
Co Requisite(s):12559 (v.2) IA Technical Studies 321
Syllabus:Comprises of two modules. Acoustics - introduction to building acoustics including acoustics history, practical measurements, sound insulation, reverberation and noise (internal and external to a building). Lighting - introduction to architectural lighting, including light fittings, calculation of simple day lighting schemes and practical exercises, conducting simple lighting simulations using Radiance.

Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have- An understanding of the terms and indices used in architectural acoustics and lighting. The ability to recognise the relevance of design implications on the acoustic and lighting environment. The ability to carry out simple acoustic design, including construction specification. The ability to recognise when the acoustic environment is being modified during the design process. The ability to carry out simple day lighting exercises in relation to shading. The ability to determine for simple designs, the required amounts of external opening required providing adequate internal illumination levels. Carried out simple lighting simulations.
Unit Assessment Breakdown: Class Test 1 30%, Class Test 2 40%, Lighting Simulation 30%. This is by grade/mark assessment.
