Syllabus:Written and spoken Chinese at an introductory level. Development of the four essential language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing through taking part in communicative activities. Introduction to Chinese society, Chinese culture and the structure of the Chinese language through lectures and audiovisual presentations.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Understood and conducted basic greetings and conversations in Chinese (Mandarin). Read simple messages in simplified and/or traditional Chinese Script. Written simple messages in simplified and/or traditional script. Understood social systems in Chinese speaking countries to a level that will enable effective use of Chinese within situations covered in this unit.
