Syllabus:Develops the ability to communicate effectively in a range of formal and informal settings. Emphasis will be put on developing awareness of language variations and regional differences in language use. The four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing will be integrated in collaborative learning activities. Students will also be introduced to the writings of famous Chinese writers and philosophers and are encouraged to critically examine the significance of these writings in shaping Chinese civilisation.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Attained a reasonable degree of competence in using a variety of appropriate and idiomatic expressions in formal and informal gatherings. Exchanged opinions and conducted discussions in Chinese on a variety of social and cultural issues. Extracted information from Chinese TV programs and newspapers and reproduce main points orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability to act appropriately in gifts/presents giving, accepting and declining, particularly during festive occasions.
