Syllabus:History and development of disease classification, the structure and conventions of ICD-10-AM, basic coding principles and the retrieval of relevant information from health records for the classification of diseases and procedures in medicine. Terms relating to the body, medical examinations, specialties and body systems, stems, prefixes and suffixes, medical and surgical terminology.
 
Unit Outcomes: On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Displayed the introductory skills required for clinical classification Demonstrated an understanding of the structure and conventions of the International Statistical Classification of Disease and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM) classification system. Identified relevant information for coding purposes from health records. Demonstrated knowledge of medical and surgical terminology.
