Syllabus: | Mining methods using backfill. Selection of backfill. Fill types and materials. Non-geotechnical aspects - manufacture, reticulation and transportation, placement. Cementing agents, binders and other additives. Performance - support, bearing capacity, exposure stability. Stope preparation - barriers and drainage. Laboratory and field testing. Scheduling. Design - physical, analytical and computer methods. Rock - backfill interaction. Soil mechanics. Case studies. |

Unit Outcomes: | On completion of this unit students will have - Understood fill properties and specialist testing techniques. Evaluated the different mine fill types and their environmental consequences. Understood their preperation and placement. Identified and studiedmining methods employing fill methods. |
