Syllabus: | Properties of fluids. Hydrostatics, stress-strain relationships. The basic equations of fluid dynamics - Integral relationships, Differential relationships, including the Navier-Stokes equations. Dimensional Analysis. Inviscid flow - potential flow and rotational flow. Vorticity. Boundary layers and turbulence, Descriptions of turbulence. Complex variables and conformal mapping. Flow over immersed bodies. Geophysical fluids, Boussinesq approximation. Motion in a rotating reference frame |
  |
Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have gained knowledge on the mechanics and properties of fluids including the main formalisms that are used when describing the motions of a continuous fluid. They will be able to apply the physics of fluids to representative problems ranging from small scale viscous flows to large-scale geophysical circulations. |
