Syllabus: | An introduction to atomic and molecular theory, chemical symbols and formula writing. An introduction to the periodic table. Chemical equations and stoichiometry. Scientific data collection, errors, the limitations of analysis. Laboratory skills including gravimetric analysis. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Explored new phenomena through developing a casual question, constructing/framing hypotheses based on the question, designing and conducting experiments to test the hypotheses and deciding whether the the hypotheses have been supported or contradicted. Discussed and where applicable applied aspects of the following concepts - described the difference between mixtures, elements and compounds, the structure of the atom, electron shell configurations, the periodic table, naming compounds, chemical changes, Chemical reactions and equations. |
