Syllabus: | The basic principles involved in structuring information objects and creating the metadata which makes them retrievable. Topics may include - information structures, hypertext, markup languages, databases, automatic and derived indexing, metadata and description, DTDs and schemas, indexing languages, standards and standards organisations, categorisation and subject analysis, evaluation of retrieval effectiveness. Practical workshops introduce students to international standards for information organisation. |

Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit, students will have- Defined and described the major types of information design and retrieval. Assessed the suitablity and effectiveness of retrieval methods for various types of information systems. Accessed current information from organisations most invovled in information retrieval research and standards setting. Evaluated the effectiveness of computer-mediated indexing. |
