| Syllabus: | An in-depth study of drug groups relevant to podiatric practice including their actions, indications, contraindications, adverse reactions, drug interactions. Doses of - antibiotics and antifungal agents, non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, analgesics, sedatives and hypnotics, general anaesthetic agents and drugs used in the treatment of acute adverse drug reactions. Prescription writing and drug regulations. |

| Unit Outcomes: | On successful completion of this unit students will have - Gained a comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practice of clinical pharmacology and therapeutics related to surgical podiatry. Developed a comprehensive knowledge of the indications and contraindications, and adverse effects of the use of antibiotics, sedatives, NSAID's, and analgesics. Gained adequate knowledge of the important drug interactions associated with the use of such agents and of the common doses of these agents. Gained understanding of prescribing protocol, including legal and ethical considerations and the rational selection of appropriate drugs to assist in the management of podiatric conditions. Gained understanding of the management of adverse drug reactions and a knowledge of the drugs used in the practice of surgical anaesthesia. |
