304901 v.1 Master of Advanced Physiotherapy Sciences
MAdvPhysioSc(Curtin)
Introduction
This course provides individuals currently working in a specific area of physiotherapy with a program designed to enhance knowledge, competence and skill in a diverse range of practical and research areas. It develops the ability to review literature critically and apply this information appropriately to the evaluation and management of client needs and contribute to the ongoing development of effective physiotherapy management. It includes laboratory and clinical and, or practical placements where assessment and evaluation and management skills are enhanced and developed. Literature is also reviewed on a number of relevant topics with research undertaken to address a specific research question.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
A bachelors degree, or equivalent, in physiotherapy from a recognised tertiary institution and a strong academic record together with a minimum of two years of relevant clinical experience at a postgraduate level. Demonstration of a commitment to continuing education is also required. Numbers are restricted and selection will be made on the basis of academic record, postgraduate clinical experience including continuing education and referees' reports. Eligibility for temporary registration with the Physiotherapists' Registration Board of Western Australia is a prerequisite for acceptance into the course.
Specific Requirements
Applicants for this course should refer to the Communicable Diseases and Criminal Record Screening/Clearance Section of this publication. Prospective applicants are advised that the program requires full participation in laboratory classes where practical skills and topics are presented. Essential learning strategies demand that all students disrobe appropriately to act as subjects for their peer group. Recent evidence of proficiency in cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a prerequisite for Clinical Management 651 and Clinical Management 652.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Successful applicants may apply for recognition of prior learning based on postgraduate experience including advanced level practice, research activities and postgraduate studies.
Duration and Availability
This fee paying course is of one year (three semesters) full-time or equivalent part-time study. Students may complete this course within one calendar year. Not all units are available each year with some of the specialisation units only offered every two years.
Course Organisation
The course will be taught within the normal semester time except that students will be required to work on their research projects Clinical Research 651 and Research Project 652 during the non-contact weeks and during the inter-semester break.
Additional Course Expenses
Students are required to purchase an anatomy license and to obtain registration with the Physiotherapists Registration Board of Western Australia.
