301130 v.3 Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Science
GradCertGIS(Curtin)
Introduction
This course is designed for professionals and practitioners from a diverse range of areas to acquire and build their knowledge and skills within geographic information science (GIScience). The course introduces geographic information systems and spatial data analysis, and helps to develop skills in the management and use of spatial data. Students are encouraged to select options from areas related to their interests. This course is available on campus and by distance education (via the Internet) to Australian and international students.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
A degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary educational institution. The qualification may be in any discipline. Applicants are assumed to have a background in mathematics and statistics equivalent to first year university level. Applicants without this background may be required to undertake appropriate preparatory units.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis. Upon graduation, students are eligible to enrol directly in the Graduate Diploma in Geographic Information Science and will be eligible for recognition of prior learning of 100 credits in that award.
Duration and Availability
This course is normally undertaken on a part-time basis over one year. It is also possible to complete this course in one semester depending on unit availability. Flexible modes of program delivery are utilised and the course is available on campus and online.
Course Organisation
The student's study program consists of three foundation full units which reflect the field of geographic information science. These units are extended by a specialist option in the broad area of spatial information. Optional units are listed below. Other specialist optional units are offered in applied mathematics, artificial intelligence, environmental biology, cartography, computing science, environmental management, geology, natural resources, remote sensing, surveying, urban and regional planning, and related disciplines. The individual optional units must be approved by the Department's Coordinator of Postgraduate Studies.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
