Introduction
This is a collaborative course between King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women, Western Australia and the School of Nursing and Midwifery. It aims to enhance the professional development of expert neonatal intensive care nurses in a highly specialised hospital setting, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit operating at a level three. The course focuses on the development of clinical leadership, promotion and integration of evidence-based nursing practice in the neonatal intensive care setting. Nursing theoryand research, as well as professional role development, are an integral part of the course.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
Requirement to be general or comprehensive nurses, currently registered, or eligible for registration, with the Nurses Board of Western Australia, with a bachelors degree in nursing or related discipline and a postgraduate diploma in nursing or related discipline and a recognised neonatal intensive care nursing qualification. Applicants must also have a minimum of two years clinical experience in a level three nursery. Those with a bachelors degree where areas of essential nursing knowledge and skills are deficient, are required to undertake units prior to course commencement. Overseas applicants are required to have completed a bachelors degree in nursing leading to registration and a postgraduate diploma in nursing or related discipline. They must be currently registered in their own country and provide documentation to that effect. They must also meet the University's usual entrance requirements. Overseas applicants are required to provide evidence of proficiency in the English language. If necessary, on acceptance into the course, overseas students are advised of requirements for provisional registration by the Nurses Board of Western Australia.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability
This fee paying course is one year full-time or equivalent part-time study. If part-time study is the preferred option, the King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women, Western Australia component must be successfully completed prior to enrolment into the required academic units.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
