Description, classification and relationships between folds, foliations and lineations. Stress and relationship to fracturing and faulting. Nomenclature of faults, displacements and fault separations. Pure and simple shear, progressive deformation and particle paths both two and three dimensional. Quantitative strain analysis. Shear zones and kinematic indicators. Superimposed folding. Folding mechanisms and fold development. Mechanical properties of rocks. Deformation mechanisms and microstructures. Crystallographic preferred orientations and importance. Dilation, porphyroblast-matrix relations and microstructural shear criteria. Use of stereographic projection in interpretation of structures.
