306908 v.1 Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental Engineering)
BEng(Curtin) OR BEng(Hons)(Curtin)
Introduction
This course offers a comprehensive training in environmental engineering for the mining industry. The Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) is a principal provider of graduates for the mining industry and has a long history of success in providing employment for its graduates. This course is unique to WASM in its focus on mine site environmental engineering. It is multi-disciplinary and appeals to those intending to work in teams and with the community in finding environmentally responsible solutions to important engineering problems that face the global mining industry. It also includes aspects of mining engineering, geology, mineral processing, biological sciences and environmental engineering and has an emphasis on mine site planning, rehabilitation and environmental management.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
Applicable Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Well-performed candidates without one of the prerequisite subjects may be accepted and required to undertake bridging programs.
Specific Requirements
Students will be required to complete an approved first aid course at their own cost prior to being eligible for the award. In order to be adequately trained as a professional engineer, it is mandatory that the student undertake 12 weeks of relevant practical experience during the course. This is normally achieved during summer and mid year vacation periods. The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
This course is four years full-time or equivalent part-time study. The first two and a half years of the course must be studied at the Bentley Campus, while the final one and a half years must be studied at the Kalgoorlie Campus.
Professional Recognition
Professional recognition for this course is currently being sought from the Institute of Engineers, Australia and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy to permit graduate membership of either institutions.
Career Opportunities
Graduates from this course are likely to be involved in mine site rehabilitation, the design of tailings dams, mine planning, environmental impact statements and the management and reporting of mine site environmental requirements. After a suitable period of employment in this industry, these professionals may move into head office positions, become senior consultants or work with government agencies or other industries that face similar environmental problems.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
