176610 v.8 Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Geology)

BEng(Curtin)

Introduction
Geological engineering requires a sound knowledge and understanding of geology and the principles of engineering, which are specifically related to the needs of the metalliferous mining industry, including both mineral exploration and mine geology. Engineering geologists are involved in mineral exploration programs and in the operation of mines. Their work includes aspects of geochemistry, geophysics, structural geology, economic geology and rock and soil mechanics, as well as the traditional skills of geological mapping and petrology. This degree is particularly suitable for those students intending to study geology, and who have a strong background in mathematics.

Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
TEE Calculus, Applicable Mathematics, and Physics.

Specific Requirements
STAT elements considered are E and Q.

Note
For more details, see WASM's Website: www.wasm.curtin.edu.au or phone (freecall) 1800 688 377.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.

Duration and Availability
The course is of four years full-time, or equivalent part-time study. The first two years of this course are only available at the Bentley Campus. The final two professional years are only available at Kalgoorlie Campus.

Intermediate Awards
A student who has successfully completed all the requirements of the Bachelor of Science (Mineral Exploration and Mining Geology) may apply under exceptional circumstance provisions for graduation in that award subject to the approval of the Senior Academic. For further definition refer to the Intermediate Awards Heading under General Information.

Course Organisation
Two major projects are carried out in the final year of the course. The projects test the ability of the student to integrate the various concepts and techniques covered in the principal areas of study.

Professional Recognition
The course is accredited by the Institution of Engineers, Australia, and recognised by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Geological Society of Australia.

Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
