303281 v.2 Bachelor of Engineering (Mining Engineering), Bachelor of Science (Extractive Metallurgy)
BEng(Curtin) OR BEng(Hons)(Curtin), BSc(Curtin)
Introduction
This double degree equips students to work in a professional capacity in both mining engineering and extractive metallurgy areas of the minerals and energy industries, through a strategic alliance between the Western Australian School of Mines' Mining Engineering and Minerals Engineering programs. In the engineering degree students major in mining engineering. In the science degree, students major in the extraction of metals from their ores. Mining engineers are responsible for the design, planning and operation of a mine. Many responsibilities are defined by law. Management of underground mines is restricted to mining engineering graduates. The course provides a comprehensive knowledge in a broad range of science and technology, particularly those aspects concerned with conservation of the environment, health and safety, ventilation, pollution and management of both people and resources. Extractive metallurgy requires a sound knowledge and understanding of chemistry and the principles of engineering, particularly chemical engineering. Metallurgists are involved in plant operations and control, management and research.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
TEE Calculus, Applicable Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.
Specific Requirements
Students will be required to complete an approved first aid course prior to being eligible for course completion. In order to be adequately trained as a professional engineer, it is mandatory that the student undertake 12 weeks of relevant practical experience during the course. The STAT is not accepted for entry to this course.
Note
Well performed candidates without some of these prerequisite subjects may be admitted but will be required to complete appropriate bridging and special course units as prescribed.
Duration and Availability
This course is five years full-time or equivalent part-time.
Course Organisation
The first two years of the course may be undertaken either on the Bentley or Kalgoorlie Campus. The first six semesters focus particularly on mining engineering, semesters seven and eight focus on metallurgy and semesters nine and ten complete the mining engineering major. The professional years, three to five, are studied in Kalgoorlie.
Professional Recognition
The Engineering degree is accredited by the Institute of Engineers, Australia. Graduates are also eligible for membership of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
