Introduction
This course provides Registered Nurses with the theoretical foundation relevant to emergency nursing and guides nursing practice in this specialised area of nursing. Applicants are expected to have prior knowledge and skills related to emergency nursing as this collaborative course is built on the Graduate Certificate in Emergency Nursing course provided by Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
A currently Registered Nurse or eligible for registration with the Nurses Board of Western Australia, hold a bachelors degree in nursing or equivalent or a degree in a related discipline. Applicants with a degree from an appropriate discipline where areas of essential nursing knowledge and skills are deficient, are required to undertake selected units prior to commencing the course. Evidence of successful completion of appropriate research units is also a course prerequisite. Selection is based on academic performance, clinical experience, professional references, 12 months post-registration clinical experience, with at least 6 months experience in emergency nursing, a satisfactory academic record and provide evidence of appropriate communication and interpersonal skills.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Students who have successfully completed the hospital based component will receive recognition of prior learning for the unit Nursing 513 - Emergency Nursing.
Duration and Availability
This fee paying course is of one year full-time or two years part-time study. As most units are offered only once in each year and in the required sequence of study, there is some limitation of choice for part-time study.
Course Organisation
Students complete the advanced nursing practice component of this course within an approved hospital or agency course.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study.
