Introduction
Mine surveying is a specialist area of surveying involving the measurement, representation and management of data associated with a mining operation. Mine surveyors are responsible for marking out, measuring and maintaining direction of all surface and underground workings on a mine site. In addition they are also legally responsible for the preparation and updating of all mine surveying plans for open pit and underground workings on the mine site, as legally required by the Department of Minerals and Energy.
Course Entry Requirements/Prerequisites
TEE Applicable Mathematics or Discrete Mathematics.
Specific Requirements
STAT elements considered are E and Q. A certificate of successful completion of an approved course in first aid is required before a degree will be awarded.
Note
Applicants without the TEE subject may still be considered, but will be required to complete bridging units. All students are encouraged to gain practical experience in mine surveying during the summer vacations.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Duration and Availability
The course is of three years full-time or equivalent part-time study. The first and second years of the course are taken in the Department of Spatial Sciences at the Bentley Campus. The third year of the course is only available at the Kalgoorlie Campus.
Intermediate Awards
A student enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Mine and Engineering Surveying) who has successfully completed all the requirements of the Associate Degree in Mine Technology (Mine Surveying) may apply under exceptional circumstance provisions for graduation in that award, subject to the approval of the Senior Academic. For further definition refer to the Intermediate Awards Heading under General Information.
Professional Recognition
Together with practical experience, this course is recognised by the Western Australian Mines Department for an Authorisation to Sign Mine Plans.
Career Opportunities
The course is designed to produce surveyors with specialist knowledge of underground and surface mines and a knowledge of engineering surveying. Mine and engineering surveyors are employed in the mining and construction industries. Because of the nature of the Western Australian economy, graduates have traditionally had excellent employment prospects with a variety of attractive career choices. These include the opportunity to work outdoors and indoors, in the city or country, in Australia or overseas. In Western Australia, the largest number of opportunities are based in country centres, but in more remote areas many operations are carried out on a fly-in, fly-out basis. Mine and engineering surveyors often work cooperatively with other professionals including engineers, mining engineers, geologists, land surveyors and cartographers. This course contains a significant number of mining units and prepares students for operational management at the quarry managers level, with the appropriate practical exprience. Further study is also available in this teaching area in the Graduate Diploma in Mining. This course prepares a person academically for operational management at the underground managers level.
Additional Course Expenses
Students may be expected to purchase a number of textbooks, readers and other vital study materials. In addition, students may also need to contribute some of the cost of consumables, which varies depending on the area of study. All students are required to have access to a portable electronic programmable calculator having hard wired trigonometrical subroutines and a minimum capacity of ten significant figures.
